Arsenal's Mikel Arteta gives the latest on injuries and potential transfers in January, saying 'The focus is on what we have'

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided updates on several key players ahead of the Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion. Kai Havertz, who missed the recent victory over Brentford due to illness, has recovered and is expected to be available for selection. Arteta confirmed, Yes, I think so when asked about Havertz's readiness.

Raheem Sterling, on loan from Chelsea, is progressing in his recovery from a knee injury. Arteta noted, Raheem’s starting to do some stuff on the pitch so that’s great news. As quickly as possible we want him available. Let’s see how he progresses this week and then see if we can go for the following week.

Defenders Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also on the mend. White, who underwent knee surgery in November, is reportedly ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation. Arteta stated that Ben is still a few weeks away. His knee looks good, he’s reacted really well, and in the first few weeks, everything is going smoothly. Regarding Tomiyasu, Arteta mentioned, Tomi again has done some stuff on the pitch but now because it’s been a long-term injury we need to see how quickly he can progress and how he reacts.

Midfielder Declan Rice, who was rested during the Brentford match, is expected to feature against Brighton. Arteta explained the decision to rest Rice, emphasizing the need to manage his playing time due to a congested fixture schedule and minor niggles. In his case especially, he plays so much football. We have nine games in this period this month and he had some niggles in the last few games. He had to come off and we have to manage every player and there are no exceptions, Arteta elaborated.

Looking ahead to the January transfer window, Arteta indicated that while the club is open to new signings, the primary focus remains on the current squad. He stated, We are always open to improving the squad if we find the right players, but at the moment, we are focused on the players we have and getting them back to full fitness. Reports suggest that Arsenal may seek defensive cover and a winger during the transfer window. As Arsenal prepares for a demanding January schedule, including fixtures across multiple competitions, the return of key players like Havertz and the progress of others in rehabilitation are timely boosts. The team currently sits second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by six points, and aims to close the gap in the coming weeks. Arteta's squad management and potential strategic additions during the transfer window will be crucial as the Gunners navigate this pivotal period in their season.
